Interesting Indianapolis plumbing stories

From the fun and wacky to the downright gross, Indianapolis-area plumbers give the scoop on their most memorable plumbing stories.

Meeting Mickey Mouse

Mike Bush, owner of highly rated Mike Bush Plumbing in Fishers, recounts the true story behind this comic adaptation.

“I have a really great client with the sweetest 2-year-old boy. The toilet was clogged up and the little kid was watching us work,” Bush says. “The mommy asked, ‘Did you flush anything?’ The boy answered no. When I flipped the toilet over, Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck were side-by-side peeking out. It was almost like they had their arms around each other, crawling out of the toilet together. My guys and I had a good laugh.”

Hot water mess

Brownsburg — “A lady called, screaming she needed a plumber,” says Bobby Lott, owner of highly rated Westside Plumbing. “When my guy rang the doorbell, no one answered but he could hear her yelling. He cautiously opened the door and she told him to come upstairs to the bathroom. A large naked woman was partway under the cabinet holding a hot water supply line to prevent it from spraying everywhere. I probably would’ve just let it spray, but that’s just me. The plumber turned the water off and replaced the hot water supply line.”

Itchy tushy

Indianapolis — “We’ve had incidents on jobs where people use toilets that haven’t been installed,” says Jack Hope, owner of highly rated Hope Plumbing. “My favorite was when a contractor used a toilet sitting in the middle of a bedroom. We walked in shortly after he realized there wasn’t any toilet paper and had wiped himself with fiberglass insulation. Fiberglass insulation will make soft skin very, very itchy. He left for the day.”

Messy job scars plumber

Indianapolis — “I got a call in Carmel to investigate a sewage smell inside a house,” says Lance Smith, owner of highly rated LD Smith Plumbing. “I entered the crawl space through a new addition and everything looked fine at first. Then all I saw was something black moving. There were maggots, roaches and sewer bugs squirming on 6 to 12 inches of raw sewage that had been dumping into the crawl space, which I had to crawl through. It was disgusting, but it gets worse. In the back of my van, I had a 5-gallon bucket full of waste I’d cleaned off my tools and myself. Someone pulled out in front of me, so I slammed on my brakes and the bucket spilled all over the van. That job scarred me for life.”

Rigid poo plunge

Indianapolis — “There was a radio contest years ago down on the Circle where the most outrageous act would receive playoff tickets for the Colts and Bears game,” says Jim Knox, co-owner of highly rated Knox Septic Sewer Service. “My brother, Darrell, opened up the top hatch of a fully loaded and freshly pumped 2,000-gallon septic truck and jumped in! In addition to being neck-high in human waste, the temperature was well below freezing. He won the contest and tickets, but wow.”

Soldier saved

Carmel — “After many attempts to auger a clogged toilet, I decided I needed to pull the toilet up to see what could possibly be lodged in the trap,” says Chris Davis, plumbing supervisor for highly rated Mr. Plumber by Metzler & Hallam. “I pulled the toilet up and moved it aside to see a GI Joe with one hand on each side of the toilet flange as if hanging on for dear life! Guess he didn’t want to be flushed.”
