Indianapolis concrete company leaves work unfinished

Unsealed deal

COMPLAINT: John Carpenter, Noblesville, Ind.

"M. VanMeter Inc. came to my home to complete a concrete patio for another contractor who was unable to complete the job. VanMeter poured, colored and stamped the concrete. The next day, the crew came back to wash the patio and cut the joints. The quality of workmanship was average, at best. Halfway across the patio, they started using a larger tamper, which resulted in part of the patio being darker than the other.

"They also did a poor job tooling the grout lines. They said they would be back in a couple of days to seal the concrete, but they never returned and didn't return my messages. Two weeks after the concrete was poured, I sealed the concrete myself."

DESIRED RESOLUTION: "I want them to reimburse me $127 for the materials and labor I provided to complete the job."

Wrong turn?

COMPLAINT: Linda Oliver, Carmel, Ind.

"Wheaton Van Lines moved me from San Marcos, Calif., to a storage unit in Indianapolis. I've moved 12 times, and I've never had an experience like this.

"In California, the mover was six hours late, saying his truck broke down. He arrived around 3 p.m. and didn't finish until after midnight. He only had two helpers instead of three.

"In Indiana, he arrived two days late. We were supposed to be at the storage unit at 8 a.m., but he was four hours late. He unloaded with only one helper — he was supposed to have two. It took from noon until 9 p.m.

"When they finally got done, I just signed off. When I unloaded the unit a month later, I realized one-third of my things were not there! Plus, I received things in boxes that weren't mine. I got a hold of someone [at Wheaton] who did a search for my missing items — they were in Florida! They said they'd bring them to me, but it was only half of what was missing. They've offered me only $90 for the rest of my missing items."

DESIRED RESOLUTION: "I want compensation for the missing items."

STATUS: Resolved
Oliver accepted Wheaton's compensation offer of $3,595 for the missing items.

Back to the old drawing board

COMPLAINT: Elliot Trexler, Indianapolis

"I hired Stilwell Remodeling & Architectural Designs LLC to gut my entire house and rebuild everything, including installing a new roof, replacing exterior siding and building a two-car garage. On the interior, I wanted them to reframe the whole house, replace all mechanical systems, insulate, drywall, install all new flooring and countertops, and install and finish the electric and plumbing.

"The roof doesn't have decking in some parts and shingles are nailed to ceiling joists. The metal flashing is on top of the shingles and doesn't go all the way around the roof. The roof line is too short, so there's a large gap between the fascia board and roof. The fascia board is too small, so I can't put gutters on the house. Many windows don't open, close or fit and don't meet code.

"They did work they weren't authorized to do: They primed the windows, so now I can't stain them. The porch looks terrible and isn't complete. Someone fell through a floor that they were supposed to have supported. They did work out of order, costing me unnecessary money, and their work was way over time and budget."

DESIRED RESOLUTION: "I want them to fix the errors covered under warranty or pay for another contractor to fix the defects."

STATUS: Penalty Box
