Don’t feel left in the dark while planning a lighting project. Enlighten yourself with some illuminating advice from these three Charlotte-area electricians.

What types of lighting does your company do?

Marc Lovisa: We do recessed, landscape, LED, custom lighting and more.

Scott Gowdy: We do outdoor and indoor, landscape lighting, floodlights and more.

Mark Evers: We install recessed lighting, flush mount lighting, chandeliers, track lighting and more.

What is the most efficient type of lighting, and what can customers do to save electricity and money?

Lovisa: LED saves up to 70 percent on energy costs. Most LEDs will last about 20 years or longer.

Gowdy: They can invest in LED or change from incandescent to compact fluorescent.

Evers: Anything LED is the most efficient and economical; however, it has a higher initial cost. Compact fluorescent lights are also efficient, but they aren’t as easy to dispose of as LEDs.

What should a consumer look for when ordering lights and hiring someone to install them?

Lovisa: It’s always wise to hire a licensed electrician, no matter how small or minor the job may seem to you. There can be unforeseen problems when just simply removing your old light fixture.

Gowdy: Know how bright they want the area to become, and whether they want warm light or cool light.

Evers: Double check dimensions. Many customers order fixtures through the Internet and when the fixtures arrive, they don’t quite meet their expectations for how they would fit.

What are the prices for some typical lighting jobs that your company does?

Lovisa: There is a broad range. A simple flush mount fixture can cost as little as $20, but we have to take into consideration the ceiling height, the style and the quantity of lights being installed.

Gowdy: It ranges based on size. A lot of typical projects fall between $300-$500.

Evers: Floodlights from scratch are $200-$250. Two-story chandeliers start at $150. We give free estimates for any other lighting.
