HVAC company disputes Chicago homeowner's complaint
COMPLAINT: Albert Jordan, Chicago
I hired All Temp Heating & Air Conditioning Inc. [in Chicago] to replace my furnace. I went into the hospital and when I came out, my furnace was off. The pipes in my home froze and burst. [All Temp's technician] inspected the problem and said he was going to talk to his boss. They never called me back.
I called them and they said the water was already leaking [prior to the installation]. I said there were no leaks or they wouldn't have been able to install the furnace. I've been calling them for two months and they just keep hanging up on me. The home's windows were boarded up before they installed the furnace; the place was well insulated and people were staying there when the pipes burst. The only holes in the walls were in the bathroom for access to the cutoff valves.
DESIRED RESOLUTION: I want the pipes throughout the house replaced, as well as the carpet in two bedrooms, the living room and the hallway.
RESPONSE: Rick Jacobs Jr., vice president, All Temp Heating & Air Conditioning Inc.
The member's home is currently vacant and no one was there during the cold months. This house isn't insulated, there are no solid windows and there are holes in the walls. At the time of install, the windows were plastic, but as of the present, he has boarded them up. The installers noted a gap between the chimney and the roof that needed to be tarred so water damage wouldn't occur.
Three months later, he contacted us saying that the furnace had defective fuses, which caused the pipes to burst. We dispatched our technician and the customer admitted to him that the pipes burst a week prior to the furnace breaking down. The technician did find the furnace wasn't working due to a blown safety switch and a defective draft switch. These were not the cause of the pipes breaking and were both repaired. We feel that All Temp is not at fault.
