Whoever came up with the expression "as cute as a bug" clearly never came face to face with a giant mosquito. These blood-sucking nuisances are the last things you want to see when you're outside this summer. Not only are their bites incredibly itchy, they can also carry a myriad of diseases! Keep mosquitoes out of your home and away from your yard with these tips.

1ELIMINATE STANDING WATER

The most effective way to reduce the number of mosquitoes around your home is to eliminate any standing water – mosquitoes love to breed in it! Check your yard to make sure there is no standing water in flowerpots, or any other garden containers.

Pro Tip: If you have a birdbath, change the water in it at least once a week.

2CLEAR DEBRIS FROM RAIN GUTTERS

Then, unclog any obstructed downspouts. Clogged gutters are one of the most overlooked breeding sites for mosquitoes around your home. For more tips on how to properly clean your gutters, read Gutter Cleaning 101 and Maintain Your Downspouts.

3TRIM BACK VEGETATION

During the day, mosquitoes like to inhabit yards with lots of dense vegetation. Trimming overgrown hedges, pruning brushes and removing tall weeds will likely help deter mosquitos.

4INSPECT WINDOW SCREENS

If you have screens in your windows, make sure they don't have any small holes that mosquitoes could sneak through. For proper instructions, read How to Keep Bugs Out of Your Home.

5AVOID CERTAIN SCENTS

Believe it or not, mosquitoes are also attracted to certain scents. Avoid as fruity or flowery fragrances.

6AVOID BEING OUTSIDE DURING DAWN AND DUSK

Mosquitoes are most active around sunrise and sunset. If you do go outdoors during these times, wearing long-sleeved shirts and pants will provide some protection.

7TRY NATURAL REPELLANTS

Mosquitoes naturally avoid certain types of herbs, especially sage and rosemary. Consider investing in natural repellents that can come as an oil base. These include: Cinnamon oil, rosemary oil, lemongrass oil, cedar oil, clove oil, and peppermint oil. For more ways to naturally repel mosquitos with herbs.
