Greening out your bathroom is the trifecta of home maintenance tasks: it will save you money on your water and utility bills, remove harsh and toxic chemicals from your bathroom and reduce the carbon footprint of your entire home. You win, the earth wins and your toilet wins.

1 First, test your toilet for leaks.

Put a few drops of food coloring in your toilet tank. If it seeps into the toilet bowl without flushing, you have a leak. Fixing it can save up to 1,000 gallons a month.

2 When you're buying toilet paper, opt for recycled rolls or Kimberly Clark's new tube-free Scott toilet paper.

When you're done, don't throw away your toilet paper rolls. Turn them into Toilet Paper Wall Art.

3 Turn off your faucet when you brush your teeth.

Stopping the flow of water while you brush your teeth will save 4.5 gallons each time.

4 Make sure all your faucets are completely shut off after use.

Sixty drips a minute will waste about 6,428 gallons of water per year, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

5 Opt for baking soda as a cleaner instead of harsh chemicals.

It's non-toxic, multi-purpose, and (best of all) inexpensive! Mix equal parts baking soda and water for a paste. Be sure to rinse the paste away with water.

6 Place candles and matches or a fresh lavender bundle near the toilet to eliminate incriminating smells.

For an eco-friendly air freshener, opt for an essential oil instead of an aerosol spray can.

7 Install a low-flow showerhead.

For $40 or less, you can significantly reduce water consumption in your home. Not only will you achieve water savings of between 25 and 60 percent, but you can also reduce the energy it takes to heat that extra water.
