How to remodel your kitchen in 7 easy steps

The kitchen is the center focus of activity in many homes. It’s a space where cooking, eating, homework, game night and so much more regularly take place.

With the kitchen being such a hub for regular activity, it may be a great time to think about remodeling the space. However, starting such a project can be overwhelming.

The remodeling of a kitchen is not a good place to cut budgets. A quality kitchen remodel is one area that will increase the value of the home. But there are ways to keep the quality and still save a lot of money. Below are seven steps to a cost-effictive and quality kitchen remodel.

1. Dream and gather.

Make a list and dream about what to change in the current kitchen and what to keep in the kitchen. Gather pictures of kitchens using magazines, websites, Pinterest, home shows and open houses and then divide the pictures into two sets; must have and would like to have. This will be important to know when it comes to working on the budget.

2. Meet with the contractor.

Get a referral list and have the contractor come to the home to discuss the extent of the project. Points to discuss:

  • Do walls need to be moved?
  • Do electrical outlets need to be changed?
  • Does plumbing need to be moved?
  • What products are needed?
  • Discuss the budget and the timing.
  • Have them take measurements.

3. Pick out appliances and flooring.

The size of the appliances that are selected will need to be taken into consideration to design the layout of the new kitchen. What new appliances will be added to the kitchen design? What changes to the flooring will be made?

4. Consult with the cabinet designer.

Schedule an appointment to pick out the cabinets and begin the design layout. Take into consideration the budget for the project, the needs and the wants. During this time, specific items will need to be selected, such as the sink, faucets, cabinet hardware, back splash tile, and paint colors.

5. Finalize the budget.

With this information, the budget can be finalized. Review the materials and labor, gather the lead times of the products and discuss the timing with the contractor.

6. Begin construction.

Now it’s time to start construction. Basic steps to begin the project include ordering the cabinets, flooring, sink and faucet. Then the contractor will begin demolishing, which includes taking out walls, flooring, old cabinets and more.

Appliances and cabinet hardware will be ordered, measured and installed. Then tasks such as painting, and installation of cabinet tops, sink, faucet, backsplash and additional appliances take place.

7. Enjoy your new kitchen.

Once the work is completed and the tools have been packed up, you’re ready to enjoy your new kitchen with your family and friends!
