How Much Would it Cost to Ground an Outlet?

3 electricians!
Question by voghteri000: how much would it cost to ground an outlet? my mom just bought a house and some outlets are grounded (said the inspector) but some had the 2 prong outlet still in the living room where we want to put the tv. we want it to be grouned to place a surge protecter.
Answered by LCD: You could have an electrician do it for typically a minimum service charge plus maybe $5-15 for a three-prong outlet - minimum labor charge about $75-400 at the extremes in very low and high cost areas respectively - commonly around $100-150 in most of the country. For little more (maybe $50 or so in parts and maybe zero to about $50 in additional labor) he would likely do about 3-4 additional outlets too on the same visit, making them 3-prong.
It might be the ground was not hooked up to the outlets because there IS no ground wire in the wiring (common before about 1960's), in which case a ground wire would have to be run to the outlet alongside the existing 2-wire wiring - much more expensive. However, since he said some of them are grounded, likely the ground wiring is there in the box and just not hooked up.
