How much should it cost to replace a subfloor?

Question by Guest_9748380: How much should it cost to replace a subfloor? The old subfloor is particle board. I want to replace it with plywood. The area involved is about 400 square feet.
Answered by LCD: Depends greatly on the specific site conditions, and especially on whether the subfloor is a full glue-down composite beam system, which would mean the floor joists/beams would have to be propped up during the new subfloor gluedown and curing time. These systems are pretty rare and relatively modern, so rarely encountered on a subfloor replacement issue.
Ballpark - around $10/SF for normal tearout and replacement, but can go to $20/SF or more if has to be run in under the walls to provide structural support required by loadings.
A blow-and-go contractor or handyman might charge half that, if you trust them to do it right with correct materials, lay direction, fastening and joint gapping.
One additional recommendation - have it glued to the joists to prevent future floor squeeking - additional cost is not much.
