Go for fish oil supplements that supply omega-3 fatty acids with a high content of DHA, docosahexaenoic acid, and EPA, eicosapentaenoic acid, according to nutritionist and chiropractor Jennah Dieter, owner of the highly rated wellness center Healthcare Complete in Newburyport, Mass.
“Omega 3’s provide numerous benefits, including balancing cholesterol levels; improving skin, hair and nail health; and promoting cardiovascular health,” she says.
Dr. Kimberly Parks, a cardiologist at highly rated Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, says clinical trials have shown taking fish oil supplements benefits people with high triglyceride levels and those with coronary heart disease or those at risk for it.
Dieter considers omega 3 as an essential element of nutrition. “Anyone can benefit from taking fish oil supplements,” she says. Experts recommend speaking with your physician to determine the amount you need, and to make sure it’s safe for you.
Parks adds that fish oil has a blood thinning effect, and cautions against their use by those with active bleeding conditions or those on blood thinning medication.
Dieter estimates the prices for fish oil supplements ranges from $15 for a 100-capsule bottle to $29 for a higher quality brand. “You get what you pay for,” she says.
Look for supplements that deliver a high EPA/DHA content and provide antioxidants nutrients for protection, Dieter says.
