How to extend the life of your deck
Repairs to an outdoor deck can be expensive if problem areas are not immediately addressed. Simple preventative measures can help avoid costly repairs and might prolong the life of your outdoor space.
John Arndt, owner of highly rated Coastal Construction in Seal Beach, Calif., says depending on what material your deck is made of, preventative measures will vary. For resealing hardwood, Arndt recommends products made by Penofin.
“Penofin is good for redwood and any kind of hardwood decking,” he says.
Arndt says there are different seals for certain woods and tinted colors.
“Penofin is the best product for all wood,” he said.
Steven Brombert, owner of highly rated Regal Deck and Stair in Los Angeles, agrees sealing – or painting – is an essential step in preventative maintenance.
“If they paint it once every five years, it will prolong the life of the deck,” he says.
Arndt says composite-type decks are easy to maintain and do not need much attention.
“Hose it off and keep it clean,” he says.
