How to extend the life of the exterior paint on your Los Angeles home
Two highly rated Los Angeles-area painting experts agree the best thing you can do to prolong the life of an exterior paint job is to wash it on a regular basis.
Michael Bellotti, of highly rated Michael Bellotti Painting in Los Angeles, suggests homeowners wash off their homes’ exteriors about every six months.
“There are chemicals and dirt that settle on the paint, and it starts to eat away at the paint,” he says. “Twice a year, get a hose and wash it off.”
Dan Dugan, of highly rated Wet Painting Company in Laguna Niguel, Calif., says a spring cleaning is best.
“I tell people to at least once a year in the springtime take a hose, a regular garden hose with a nozzle, and wash your house down,” he says. “Keep the dirt and the dust off and the paint job will last a lot longer.”
Dugan says this is a task any homeowner can do, and it should take about an hour to wash down all sides of the home. He warns against power washing, as the high-pressure blast could end up damaging the exterior paint.
“That’s too much pressure, and paint can come off,” he says. “All you’re doing is removing dirt and dust. You’re not power washing to get down to the nitty-gritty. You just want to get the dirt and the light dust off.”
