Homeowner says Portland-area painter did poor work

COMPLAINT: Francine Albaugh, Camas, Wash.

I hired Mark Stilwell Painting to paint two rooms, one small bathroom and a hallway. I was to leave for Hawaii early Saturday morning and didn't pay attention as I should have, but I did notice that Mark's employees did most of the painting.

They were finished on Friday, and I did a quick run-through. It looked fine, but I noticed my ethernet cable plug had a thick layer of paint on it. I asked Mark about it, and he took a brush with paint thinner on it to the end.

When I got home from my trip, the first thing I noticed was that the bifold closet doors had been hung backward, with paint streaks on the right side. I couldn't get into my closet. He had painted the wrong side. I called him twice about it, and he said he would come out the next day. He never showed.

When I inspected the entire job, it was terrible everywhere! The wood doors and baseboards had thick brush marks going every direction; ceiling paint did not cover over existing paint; window and door hardware were covered with paint; windows had globs of paint around the frames, weatherstripping and the inside of doors were covered with large streaks of paint; furniture they had moved had oil paint fingerprints all over them.

I asked for a full refund and told Mark the job was really bad. I sent him pictures. He e-mailed me that he would repay $500, only because I didn't let him come back and fix it. Why would I want him to come back after he messed up so bad? I found another company to do it right. It cost me thousands of dollars more to do the job correctly.

DESIRED RESOLUTION: I want a complete refund of $2,600.

The problems with the job were never explained to me until after the member had already hired another company. The member wanted the woodwork and doors to be hand-painted to reduce the cost of the project. We did exactly what she wanted.

I did agree after looking at the photos we had missed a few spots and would repair those areas. The member hired a different company to repaint all the trim before I had a chance to see the missed areas. I could have easily repaired the problems in a few hours, yet was never given the opportunity. I have agreed to send her back $500, yet she demands all her money returned.
