Homeowner says basement waterproofer mistakenly throws belongings in the trash

Member complaint

I hired AM Shield Waterproofing of Albertson, New York, to do a complete basement demo, mold removal and install a dehumidifier to address a huge mold problem in my mother’s basement.

We used them before and they were great. My mother was told we could leave anything we wanted to keep in the middle of the basement or put stuff in the cabinets, so we did.

The contractor who did the demo threw away the custom cabinets, which were not affected by mold, and everything in them. They also threw away almost-new power tools, and a really nice miniature stadium collection and my late father’s executive desk that I planned to restore. That is beyond devastating.

They threw those things away without warning us. My mother was home and they could have asked. I estimate we lost at least $2,500 worth of tools and other items. The desk was priceless to me. I’m incredibly disappointed.

A company employee offered to do another $600 job to make up for it. Was he joking? That wouldn’t even cover the tools.

I want $5,000, which equals the cost of the demo portion of the job.

Have a complaint?

Our Angie’s List complaint resolution team attempts to resolve disputes between members and service providers. During this process, three outcomes can happen: Penalty Box, Resolved or Stalemate. Companies that don’t respond to a member’s complaint will be placed in the Penalty Box until they respond. A case becomes Resolved if a company addresses the complaint to the member’s satisfaction, or it becomes a Stalemate if the provider responds, but the company and the member can’t reach an agreement.
