Homeowner bothered by slow Boston bathroom addition

Homeowner bothered by slow Boston bathroom addition

COMPLAINT: Ted Live, Cambridge, Mass.

"I hired Sustainable Construction Services to build two new bathrooms. The workmen made innumerable mistakes that had to be corrected and their supervisors were rarely present to oversee the work.

"Major problems of non-coordination among the subcontractors also resulted in having to redo many of the component tasks.

"The total disruption of my home for twice the length of their original 'conservative' estimate of four months was inexcusable. Punch-list work went on, at an ever-slower pace, for another four months and then ground to a complete halt, with several significant items unfinished.

"Daniel [Glickman, the president] denied any responsibility for the remaining problems, and refused to even come to the job site to see them himself.

"Eventually he offered a $1,000 settlement for one really obvious problem, but then, despite several reminders, didn't send the check for more than four months.

"After a lot of corrections, it's a generally fine end product, but with a few significant outstanding problems and many minor flaws visible."

DESIRED RESOLUTION: "I want them to fix or compensate me for the remaining problems and punch-list items."

RESPONSE: Daniel Glickman, president

"We've made many efforts to satisfy this member. After the formal punch list was completed, we returned again and again to do other work requested.

"Although we feel that many requests have been unreasonable, we provided further work and/or provided refunds and cash settlements.

"As clearly stated on the check, the last offer of $1,000 that was accepted by the member was a final settlement on all claims. Many of these claims we see as change orders, yet the client refused to pay for them.

"We're sincerely sorry that the relationship with this client didn't work out to be satisfactory. We too have grievances and have suffered through this project, but a final settlement has been executed."

STATUS: Stalemate
