Hire a handyman for the holidays

During the busy holiday season, it's likely that you already have your hands full with cooking, shopping, wrapping gifts and attending get-togethers with family and friends. Since there are still things that will probably need to be done, hiring a professional can be a stress-free way to make sure you’re ready for the holidays.

One way to ensure you get to the bottom of your holiday to-do list is to hire a handyman. A handyman is a highly skilled craftsman or “jack of all trades,” who has a wide range of skills in maintenance and home repair. Homeowners can benefit from hiring handymen because they are usually hired to complete several small projects over a short period of time.

Hire a handyman for these holiday projects:

1. Hanging holiday lights. It's always nice to see the whole neighborhood lit up for the holidays, but the task of actually hanging the lights can appear daunting if you don't know what you're doing. Instead of risking your safety by fumbling with a ladder and risking electrocution with the electric staple gun, save yourself the trouble by hiring a professional. A handyman would have all of the necessary equipment and skills needed to ensure a quick and aesthetically appealing result.

2. Decorating the home. In addition to hanging holiday lights, many homeowners like to embellish their homes with all types of holiday decorations to add a festive touch. These can include hanging wreaths, holly, mistletoe and other holiday-themed decorations.

Matt Miller, operations manager at HandiCo Inc. in Chicago, says he has seen a decrease in calls for hanging lights, but he still gets calls from people who need help with decorations. “Many of our customers still do call for us for holiday decorations because they trust our workers and don't want to worry about who is working in their house.”

3. General repairs. If you're having the family over for an extended holiday visit, the last thing you want to do is go through the trouble of tightening the staircase railing as a do-it-yourself home improvement project. When your home needs a repair or renovation during the holidays, don't sacrifice time you could be spending with your family by trying to fix the problem yourself.

Bob Mignogna, handyman and owner of highly rated Handymen from Heaven in Needham, Mass., says most of his holiday-related calls are for people who want to make repairs before guests arrive. “Most holiday work is preparing the home for visitors and family,” he says. “I get calls to paint interior wood work, fix visible blemishes, hang new curtains, fix a chair leg, etc.”
