A healthy mouth can help your entire body

Everybody wants a winning smile. It’s among the first things people notice; adding significantly to the first impression you leave among those you meet. However, a great smile is more than cosmetic; it’s the result of good oral health.

According to the American Dental Association, more people are keeping their natural teeth throughout their lifetime as a result of healthier lifestyles, fluoride and quality dental care. As efforts for increased oral health became common so does our knowledge that good oral health correlates with good health overall.

The benefits of proper dental health go far beyond dental health. According to the American Heart Association infections in the oral cavity can be a source of heart disease and stroke. A broken tooth or a cavity can become infected, and if the infection goes untreated it can cause heart attack or stroke once in the bloodstream.

The American Diabetes Association also promotes proper dental health as important for people suffering from diabetes. According to the agency, diabetics are more susceptible to gum disease because of the amount of sugar in their blood. The excess sugar can negatively affect their teeth and cause dental problems.

Bad oral health can also cause lung disease. Infections can move from teeth into the bloodstream, reaching the lungs. Pneumonia and other infections can occur as a result. Luckily, we live in a period where dental care products continually improve.

Here are some ways to take care of your teeth, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services:

  • Brush teeth at least 2 times a day. This will clean the teeth and prevent cavities from forming.
  • Floss at least once a day. Flossing will help remove harmful materials in the hard to reach places between the teeth.
  • Go to the dentist twice a year. A Boston dentist will be able to identify problems early in their development and take care of them before they get serious.
  • Avoid alcohol and tobacco. Both of these substances are bad for the enamel of the teeth.
