Guard your skin from the sun while volunteering outdoors in Atlanta

Looking for a way to make a difference this summer? Thankfully, there are abundant outdoor volunteer opportunities in Atlanta for a variety of different causes, so you’re bound to find a way to donate your time in a way that interests you! To get you started, here are the names of just a few of those organizations offering excellent volunteer opportunities: Rivers Alive, The Furniture Bank of Metro Atlanta, the Atlanta Wild Animal Rescue Effort and Atlanta Habitat for Humanity,

As you venture out into the outdoors to donate your time, remember that you’ll need to protect yourself from the sun’s rays. Though getting a little sun is good for your body and mind, excessive sun exposure can lead to painful sunburns, prematurely aged skin and it is the number one cause of skin cancer.

To keep yourself safe from the sun while you’re lending a helping hand, follow these three simple tips:

Keep skin covered up. Tightly woven fabrics effectively block out the sun’s rays. For ultimate sun protection, wear lightweight clothes that fully cover your limbs. Top off your look with a wide-brimmed hat that shields your eyes from the brightness of the sun and shades your face and neck.

Slather on the sunscreen. To get protection from both UVA and UVB rays, choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen that contains at least one of the following active ingredients: ecamsule, avobenzone, oxybenzone, titanium dioxide, sulisobenzone or zinc oxide. Be sure to reapply regularly, especially if you’re perspiring. Learn more about sunscreen at Angie's List's sunburn-preventing Fun in the Sun infographic.

Give yourself breaks. Take a shade break every so often to protect your skin.

While you may go to every effort to prevent excessive sun exposure, it’s still possible to get sun damage if you’re spending a lot of time outdoors. In the case that you notice abnormal moles or other skin irregularities, be sure to visit an Atlanta dermatologist.
