Glendale, Calif. plumbers emphasize vent stack importance

How important are vent stacks, and what is their purpose? - Angie's List member Mike Shadoan

Vent stacks are crucial components of every plumbing system, says Jeff Hachey, general manager with highly rated Moe Plumbing Service in Glendale, Calif. “They serve both a mechanical and safety purpose,” Hachey says. “They equalize air pressure in the pipes and exhaust noxious gas and odors into the atmosphere instead of inside your home.”

Because vent stacks are necessary to keep your family safe and your plumbing system running, Bruce Mauerhan, owner of highly rated Mauerhan Plumbing in Glendale, Calif., says the Uniform Plumbing Code requires every residence to have them. “Each fixture in a home – new or old – should be vented,” he says. “Without them, the drains won't function properly.”

According to both plumbers, there are two main indicators of potential issues with your vents. “If your drain makes a ‘glug-glug’ noise after it drains, or if you smell sewer gas, you may have a problem,” Mauerhan says.

While vent stacks might need to be cleaned out occasionally, Hachey says they rarely need to be repaired. “In my 25-year career I've seen a clogged vent stack maybe half a dozen times,” he says. “I've seen soda cans, roofing materials, bird nests and even a basketball stuck inside.”

He estimates you can expect to pay anywhere from $100 to $3,500 for vent stack maintenance or repairs, depending on the diagnosis.
