Furniture upholsterer upholds love for renewing in Helotes
Worn out chairs, scratched up tables and outdated couches find new life when customers bring them to highly rated Tony Darryl Upholstery. “We can restore furniture to when it was first built,” says owner Tony Cuquet, whose favorite pieces to repair are those handed down. “That’s why I love this business. If it’s that old and it’s really good furniture, it’s worth restoring it.”
Member Wendy Kneupper of Natalia hired Cuquet to reupholster an eight-piece sectional that belonged to her mother. “He knew exactly where in the sample books to find exactly what I had in mind,” says Kneupper, who paid $5,400. “His work is holding up well. With three grandchildren and three dogs, that says a lot.” Cuquet, who started his business 17 years ago after working for a larger upholsterer, uses his simpler middle name for his business title. He meets customers in their homes to choose fabrics or stains. “You have to match what you have, so we have to go to the house 99 percent of the time,” says Cuquet, who also works with customers who’ve already purchased fabric. “We get a lot of good reviews because we pay attention to details.” The company also picks up and returns furniture to clients in a 60-mile radius of San Antonio. Typical turnaround is three to four weeks, and costs start at $150 for repairing a fabric rip and vary based on furniture size, fabric and padding choices.
2012 Angie’s List Super Service Award Winner:Tony Darryl Upholstery
Tony Darryl Upholstery, located in Helotes, was named a 2012 Best contractor and won the Super Service Award in 2011 and 2012.
Member Carol Rahn, who found Cuquet on Angie’s List, paid $500 for the Helotes company to repair a chair left unused for a decade in her basement. “A long ago pet had chewed a large hole in the seat of the chair,” the Northside member says. “When we moved to San Antonio, we decided to take the chair and have it reupholstered. The chair arrived back quicker than he estimated and looks wonderful. We couldn’t be more pleased.”
When he’s not stretching fabrics or replacing padding, Cuquet gives back to the community. Tony Darryl Upholstery participates in the Texas Adopt-a-Highway program, and five employees clean up a stretch of roadway four times a year. He also cycles in several fundraising events, including the Tour de Cure for the American Diabetes Association and the BP MS 150 for the National MS Society: Lone Star.
Member Lucie Dowe wanted her large sofa and two chairs to look like new for the formal area in her new Northside home. Cuquet met her at both homes, let her keep fabric samples and picked up the pieces from her old home and delivered them to the new one. “All of the pleats were perfect,” she says. “All of the [sofa] fabric was lined. It looked like a new piece of good furniture. Not only is his work great, but his personality is also winning. He inspires confidence.”
SSA Criteria: Each year, Angie’s List awards this honor to companies that have earned an outstanding service rating, according to our members. In 2012, the criteria included a minimum number of reviews in a category during the reviewing year, maintaining an A average on those reviews, as well as a current and total overall A, and being in good standing with Angie’s List. In your locale, the minimum number of reviews was 5. About 5 percent of companies were eligible for the award. The SSA is based on a company’s previous service record, and ratings can change. Be sure to always check the List before hiring.
