Flu season isn’t over in Chicago: Know when it's time to see a pediatrician

There’s nothing worse than being stuck inside during nice weather due to an illness. While flu season is over for most of the country by mid-March, many cities in Illinois are experiencing a late outbreak of a nasty flu bug this year. Even though the symptoms so far have proven to be mild, Chicago docs say there’s no way to predict how severe the outbreak may become.

School is still in session, which makes your children prime culprits for picking up germs. If your son or daughter exhibiting any of these symptoms, it may be time for a visit to your pediatrician.

People often confuse the flu and the common cold because of their similar symptoms. A high fever is indicative of the flu, rather than the common cold. Though both the flu and cold are primarily respiratory conditions, many children with the flu experience GI symptoms like vomiting or diarrhea. In general, the flu will come on very suddenly.

While the flu is a viral infection that doesn’t require antibiotics, your child may still need to get medical care. Young children are at a much higher risk for developing serious flu-related complications than healthy adults are. If your child’s flu symptoms worsen or don’t go away, you should visit your local pediatrician.

When in doubt, it’s always best to err on the side of caution with sick kids. If your son or daughter is experiencing any of these symptoms, one of the top-rated Chicago pediatricians will be able to provide him or her with unparalleled care. And, hey! The sooner the doctor starts treating your child’s illness, the less likely Mom is to catch it!

One thing new parents learn quickly is how many diseases young children can get, and how similar the symptoms of very different illness are. Finding the right pediatrician should happen well before going into labor. With the chaos of getting your home ready and preparing to take time off of work you don't want to be in a rush to find your pediatrician.
