COMPLAINT: Diane and Mark Longerbone, Fishers, Ind.
"We signed a proposal with Bauerle Roofing to replace our roof for $5,380.
"Bauerle's proposal states, 'Once this proposal is accepted, its terms and conditions can be altered only by a written agreement, signed by both parties which identifies all deviations, deletions and/or additions to the work and which clearly states the increase or decrease on the contract sum.'
"The day the job was completed, Mr. Bauerle stated he was four squares short. He e-mailed us an invoice for $880 for his error.
"This is the second roof Bauerle has replaced at this residence and we haven't made any additions to the structure since his first job.
"Two estimates from [other] contractors state a reroof would take 24 squares. Mr. Bauerle has retained an attorney to request us to pay the $880 for his error. It's the company's mistake and it shouldn't be passed on to the customer."
DESIRED RESOLUTION: "We want Bauerle to drop the additional $880 charge."
RESPONSE: Robert Bauerle, owner, Bauerle Roofing
"The members and I signed contract for 24 squares of roofing. Near the end of the job, I noticed the house was actually 28 squares, not 24.
"The members even noticed we were out of shingles and asked why the house wasn't done. I informed them that we were short and I needed to buy four additional squares of roofing.
"The cost for materials plus labor was $880. They were fine with this because, of course, I couldn't leave their house with four squares of shingles missing.
"I tried to contact the members on several occasions and even sent them a friendly e-mail so we could work this out, and I received no response. I finally contacted my attorney, who sent the members a demand letter for the remaining balance of work completed.
"I haven't heard from them to date and their job has been completed for more than two months."
Editor's note: Bauerle canceled the remaining balance due and the members consider the matter closed.
