Fight wrinkles with skin treatment before sleeping

Before you go to bed at night you probably brush your teeth.  Your dentist is probably glad of that, but your dermatologist would tell you that's also the best time to take care of your skin so that it stays looking and feeling young, vibrant and healthy.

Start your nighttime routine by washing your face with a gentle cleanser -- one that’s free of harsh chemicals and scents. Be sure to remove makeup completely.

After you’ve washed your face, apply a toner to refresh skin and enhance firmness.

According to Atlanta dermatologist Dr. Sumayah Talieferro, applying a moisturizer before bed can reduce the appearance of aging and wrinkles.  This becomes more important as you get older because as skin ages, it loses its ability to retain moisture.  Dry skin looks older than moisturized skin.   Of course, moisturizer can’t actually prevent the aging of skin -- but it can minimizes the effects of aging.

Not all skin types are the same. To get the best results from your cleanser, toner and moisturizer, talk to your dermatologist to find out which non-comedogenic active ingredients you should look for in your products.

To complete your youthful, glowing look, extend your nighttime skin care regimen beyond your face.

Experts suggest following a diligent nighttime regimen for the skin on your hands and feet.  A few nights a week, thoroughly cover your hands and feet with a heavy cream containing natural ingredients such as shea butter to keep skin looking and feeling its best.

Charlotte dermatologist Patricia Roddey, who is highly rated on Angie's List, ways to avoid dry skin in winter. To ease the discomfort and minimize the unsightly appearance of dry, flaky skin in winter, Dr. Roddey suggests short showers of no longer than about five minutes, using warm -- not hot -- water and a moisturizing soap. Following the shower, be sure to apply a moisturizing lotion to the skin.

Finally, be sure you’re getting plenty of shuteye once you complete your nightly beauty routine. Good sleeping habits give your body the opportunity to repair and rejuvenate skin, and also help your body fight dark circles and bags under your eyes.

By carefully and diligently following these steps, you’ll be well on your way to more healthy, youthful skin. For more tips on how to keep wrinkles at bay, check out this Wrinkle-Reducing Skin Care Tips infographic.
