COMPLAINT: Karen Griffin, Alexandria, Va.
"I hired Shiner Roofing Siding & Windows to install a new roof with new decking. My old roof wasn't leaking, but there was dampness in the attic, so I wanted to replace it. I thought everything turned out perfectly, but within a year and a half, I noticed water stains on the ceiling and I've had continuous problems with the roof.
"My warranty will expire soon, so I had them come out. They told me the main seam of the roof was leaking and it should've been sealed properly at the time of installation. The owner, Kevin Shiner, said he didn't see any places where he thought it'd leak again and gave me the name of a painter to repair the water damaged ceiling.
"I asked him if he'd extend the warranty on my roof for another year because of the problems. He offered a roof maintenance program for $395 per year. This new roof cost me almost $10,000, I wanted the peace of mind of a good quality roof. Instead, I've had more worries than ever."
DESIRED RESOLUTION: "I would like an extension of my warranty for another year, and the flashing and caulking replaced on the firewall between my house and my neighbor's house. I also want Shiner Roofing to pay for all the repairs to my bedroom where the leaking roof caused water damage."
RESPONSE: Kevin Shiner, CEO, Shiner Roofing Siding & Windows
"We did hear from the customer because of an attic fan vibration, which we promptly addressed. We responded to the customer's concerns and also dispatched a painter to the house before this report was filed. We've made many attempts to contact the customer but were never contacted back.
"We never said her attic could be moisture free. We informed her that her humidostat fans were set too low and wouldn't run enough to remove the amount of humidity she wanted removed. No attic can be 100 percent humidity free. We will resolve this complaint."
