Exceptional car service keeps members' vehicles in tip-top shape

Here’s the latest Post of Happiness for great service from Washington D.C.-area auto repair shops as selected by the Angie’s List Newsroom staff.

Logan’s Automotive, Kensington, Md.

Logan’s Automotive keeps Susan Lach’s 1998 Mercury Sable running smoothly. “Renee Guzman has taken care of my Sable since 2003,” Lach says. “He inspects it twice a year and performs all routine maintenance. When something is wrong, he takes the car in the same day and often has it repaired the that day or early the next day. I live alone so he is kind enough to take me home after I drop the car off and pick me up to return it. The car runs like a top thanks to Renee’s expertise. What would I do without him? Over the years he has done major repairs such as suspension and exhaust system as well as the minor things like wiper blades and oil changes. I hope he is there as long as I continue to drive.”

Precision Import Service, Fairfax, Va.

Precision Import demonstrated exceptional auto service to Steve Karagianides. “I brought my car in for brake service after hearing a loud screeching problem while driving,” Karagianides says. “The team examined the car and called me back promptly to let me know the problem was with the tires, not the brakes. While noisy, it was safe to drive without any additional service. They explained the issue with the tires thoroughly and also gave me tidbits about what may need to be fixed in the next year or so. They returned the car without charging a penny, even after inspection and filling the tires up. This was the first time I ‘ve taken a car in for service- — including a simple oil change — and not had no extra fees or recommendations for additional immediate service. The team seemed like a group of expert mechanics, who know their craft but also were very honest and up-front about the car.”

Satellite Motors, Silver Spring, Md.

Satellite Motors keeps David Pancost’s vehicles going and going and going. “I’ve been using Satellite to maintain my Toyotas since 1984,” Pancost says. “That includes three Corollas, one MR2, two Camrys and a Previa as well as one Mazda Miata. I would never go to anyone else, and the fantastic service I’ve gotten from Satellite is the reason I drive Toyotas. Having a fantastic mechanic who does great work at a fair price, that’s something you don’t find everyday. They’ve done all maintenance & repair work, including warranty work, which I’ve paid for, rather than going to a dealer for free warranty service. I keep my cars till the wheels fall off, and to do that I need a mechanic who does all the routine maintenance, makes sure I get additional when necessary, and fixes the sorts of things that can happen to even Toyotas as they go above 100K miles. The folks at Satellite always stand behind the work and make good when the unexpected happens. They’re fantastic. I’ll never go anywhere else.”

Merv’s Auto Repair, Springfield, Va.

Merv’s Auto Repair gained a new customer in Steve Watkins after a dealership offered a whopping estimate. “I recently moved to Alexandria from Charlottesville,” Watkins says. “I took my SUV to the GMC dealer here for 36,000 mile service. I had last had it serviced in Charlottesville about five months ago, and the serviceman reported no problems. All of a sudden, the Alexandria dealership tells me I need $3,400 worth of work. They said I needed a complete brake job and front differential replacement as it poured out fluid. This sounded suspicious, so I searched Angie’s List and found great review’s for Merv’s, which is near my house. I told them what the dealer had said and left my car. They called back two days later and said that my brakes had at least 35 percent remaining and would be fine for at least another 15,000-18,000 miles. They found nothing wrong with the front differential other than the fluid needed changing. I also had a problem with a warning lights coming on periodically for apparently no reason. I did not mention this to Merv’s, but they found and fixed it on their own. Total bill: $188. I should also point out that even if my car had in fact needed all the work the dealership said it did, Merv’s estimate was less than one third of what the dealer quoted me. I will use only Merv’s for my auto work for as long as I live in the area. They are open until 8 p.m. on weeknights, so it is easy to drop off and pick up your car after work.
