Despite a previous shop’s work, my 1958 Austin-Healey was running roughly. Steve [Juvenal, the owner] carefully and thoughtfully went over the engine, ignition and carburetors to work out all the problems.
His shop is small but it has all the needed diagnostic instruments, some of the same vintage as the cars he works on. His patience and careful work made a vast difference in how the car runs.
He fixed a problem with the spark plug wires; he corrected the mixture on the carbs; he sorted out the dashpots on the carbs; he fixed a fast idle and poor responsiveness; he tested for cylinder pressure and for leakage as well; he also made notes of other items that might be a problem in the future. All of these little things led to the solution to the poor performance, and made my car into the fun ride that it should be.
The experience was quite pleasant and professional. After a phone conversation, I arranged to get the car to Steve. He quoted me a price per hour for the diagnosis and gave a likely number of hours that it would take. Once it was at his shop, he reported back to me on the phone about the diagnosis. His information was thorough and well-explained.
He proceeded only with my authorization on the repairs, and went through several rounds of testing after each element (ignition, carbs and engine) was worked on. We would then converse about what to do next, and after about a week, all was well.
The entire process was very professional and knowledgeable, relying on the experience that one correction in an area can affect all the others. Steve kept me informed of the price at all steps, and the prices were quite reasonable.
After the week, we arranged for the pickup, and the car was ready to go and running great. Steve gave me the car that I thought about for so long during a frame up restoration. His careful and precise analysis corrected problems that had been left by three previous shops. We'll be back in about 500 miles for a checkup with a big smile!
