Does Plastic Window Film Really Help with Drafts?

3 pros!
Insulating window film can help retain up to 55 percent of your home’s heat in the winter.
You’ve likely seen plastic in the windows of homes as you drive up and down the streets of your town during the winter. But does it really help keep the drafts out and save energy?
According to Indianapolis Power & Light Company, it does. In fact, they recommend it in their energy saving tips.
But don’t just duct tape plastic trash bags around your windows and call it a job well done.
Sandy Shoaf, IPL communications administrator, recommends purchasing window film and a window insulation kit from a hardware store.
The prices for these range between $10 and $30. There are different type of films, including ones for glare reduction and privacy. To help reduce drafts and save money and energy, you should purchase an insulating film.
According to Lowe’s, an insulating window film can help retain up to 55 percent of your home’s heat in the winter.
Shoaf says to follow the instructions on the kit, which generally advises you to stretch the plastic over the window, then use a hair dryer to shrink the plastic around the edges and seal out air leaks. “This works well as an energy efficiency measure and is cost-effective,” she adds.
Know that this is a quick fix and means to save money and energy through the winter, but if your windows are drafty, you should consider hiring a highly rated window replacement company to assess. Additionally, consider a home energy audit to find other energy saving measures you can take.
