Does coffee sober up someone who's drunk?
Many turn to coffee after a hard night of drinking to sober up, but the jolt of caffeine won't reduce cognitive deficits, says Thomas J. Gould, a researcher at Temple University.
In a recent study on mice, he found those given alcohol and caffeine didn't fare better in a maze than mice given alcohol alone.
Similarly, drunk partygoers who feel less sedated may be headed for double trouble. "They may translate that into I'm not as drunk so I can drive," Gould says.
