Doctor's office staff sours overall care experience

Description of experience: "Dr. Sanson saw our son for the first three years of his life and our daughter for the first week of her life."

Member comments: "She's pleasurable to work with and we miss her. But, the more Dr. Sanson's practice grew, the more difficult it became to go there.

"Her staff was incredibly rude — prompting us to change offices. After which, they wouldn't allow me to speak with her and became increasingly unreasonable. They wanted to charge me for an incomplete set of medical records.

"Dr. Sanson's a great doctor, just don't upset the staff — they'll make your life a nightmare."

Heath care provider's response: "It's always humbling when parents are confident with the medical care I provide, and I appreciate when they tell me so," says Dr. Jayne A. Sanson.

"In regards to the issue at hand, I shall take the candid comments as constructive criticism and have discussed the concerns with the staff. As such, we have implemented plans to improve patient care, including a pediatric triage nurse, another medical provider and expanded hours."

It is not uncommon for office staff to treat patients poorly. My doctor in Virginia was very good but her staff is very rude and incompetent. I complained to the doctors several times but nothing changed. You can only change it by going elsewhere.

In the past 5 years in particular, I have experienced the unpleasant, unhelpful attitudes and indifferent care of quite a few hospital attendants as well as staffs of physicians. In each case, I have spoken to the person in charge about the behaviors and, if s/he did not see to it that the behaviors changed, I left the practice or went to a different hospital or facility. Sadly, I believe that the erosion of service in not only the medical area but also in too many other businesses and professional offices and institutions reflects a general, widespread and dangerous undercurrent in our culture of resentment and dissatisfaction with working. My training as a clinical counselor and organizational consultant indicates to me that these very prevalent behaviors are the result of the wide gap in our country between the "haves and have-nots," The flaunting of the possessions and lifestyles of "the rich and famous," made all too accessible on television, encourages the "average" person to feel undervalued, underprivileged and disgruntled. Pride in one's work and one's performance is absent and people in charge, including too many physicians especially, make far too much money in comparison with their staff people and show too little appreciation and respect for that staff. "Physicians, heal yourselves," if you really want the health care system to improve. (Before retiring recently, I was a licensed practitioner in the mental health field for many years. In my offices, we put the welfare of the staff at the top of the list of priorities in patient care.)

We have had similar experiences as well. Most recently we left our Dentist for these same reasons. We have had extremely bad experiences with dental office staff.
