Custom-built house is dream home for Texas couple's retirement

More than a decade after purchasing a plot to build their dream home, it became a reality for members David and Cindy Heminger of New Braunfels, Texas north of San Antonio.

“We knew that we wanted to retire in Hill Country, but we weren’t looking forward to the stress and emotional toll associated with the design and building process,” he says. “After a thorough canvassing of the area’s existing home market, we concluded that if we were to get exactly what we wanted, we would have to build.”

Their architect recommended highly rated Canavan & Frank Custom Homes of New Braunfels. The $750,000 custom home for retirement features indoor and outdoor living and entertainment spaces including a home office, single-level living and forethought to accessibility when the couple is less mobile in the future, he says.

“The floor plan is just right for us,” he says. “The home design fits perfectly on our Hill Country lot. We love all of the outdoor living spaces. The home was designed for entertainment, and it flows well, both indoors and out. Finally, the home was built with security systems that give us peace of mind.”

Heminger says they planned the home design for two years before contacting a builder or an architect to make sure everything fit perfectly into their lifestyle. “By the time we found our builder, our overall design and expectations were already well-defined,” he says.

Four factors influenced Heminger’s builder decision, including confidence that the project would be completed as designed with minimal surprises, ease of working with the builder, personal integrity and trust and a long list of satisfied clients.

“We’ve owned several newly built homes, but we’ve never lived in one that was totally custom,” he says. “We’ve found that this home perfectly suits our lifestyle and tastes. It’s comfortable and convenient.”
