Contractor rescues Arlington member’s kitchen remodel

Arlington, Virginia member Dawn Ulm spent years saving money for her kitchen remodel, and upon completion, she wasn’t happy. The company she hired to take her kitchen from the 1970s to the 21st century and provide sufficient storage space had performed well below her expectations.

“The original contractor did a shoddy job on the backsplash and installed the cabinet molding with a noticeable split in the wood,” Ulm says. “I wasn’t pleased with how the contractor put the cabinet molding above the cabinet.” Additionally, she said, glass stones within the mosaic tiles were chipped, end tiles were missing and electrical outlets on the backsplash weren’t updated for new faceplates.

Ulm hired highly rated Fairlington Maintenance Services of Arlington, Virginia, to redo the first company’s mistakes. Fairlington salvaged the backsplash by reinstalling it and replacing chipped tiles. Ulm says Fairlington fixed the electrical outlets on the backsplash so the new steel faceplates fit properly.

Throughout the $1,400 project, Ulm says owner Victor Sison had ideas for enhancing the kitchen’s appearance. “I asked Victor for recommendations to make my kitchen look better, and he told me that he thought the kitchen would look more finished if there was crown molding around the soffit in the ceiling,” Ulm says. “By installing the crown molding in the center of the kitchen ceiling, it essentially was a low cost way to dress up the soffit.”

Ulm also asked Sison to paint the kitchen the same color as the living and dining rooms.

Now, Ulm is happy.

“I love it,” she says. “It looks good. It’s practicable, and I have space for everything!”
