Consumers bought more health food in 2009 than in 2008

The same firm that tracks what we watch on TV is now watching what we eat.

By keeping tabs on supermarket sales of healthy foods, including fresh produce, The Nielsen Company is monitoring the impact of health and wellness initiatives.

The Healthy Eating Index shows consumers appear to have eaten somewhat healthier in 2009 compared with 2008, but health experts say we still have a long way to go.

Laura Poland, executive director of The Rite Bite, a highly rated fitness and nutrition center near Columbus, Ohio, recommends making a grocery list based on meals to avoid the fast food trap. "I can't say enough about planning ahead."
