COMPLAINT: Connie Roberson, Blacklick, Ohio
"Rockford Homes built my home. Overall, it's decent, but there have been too many unwanted surprises that have cost me time and money. I asked over and over for upgrade options and zoning restrictions, and they told me they didn't have them in writing.
"I finally got upgrade options but never received zoning restrictions. They told me verbally that they'd allow a patio up to 18 feet from my home, but I found out after closing that I can't build a patio more than 6 or 7 feet wide on the property. Rockford's response is, 'Too bad.'
"They also told me they wouldn't build two of the same houses next door to each other; however, after the closing, they had the lot next to me rezoned and built the same model next door. The township will deny my initial request for a patio, and then I'll have to pay an additional $400 plus other costs to file a zoning variance. Rockford Homes is also in charge of the homeowners' association, and they've indicated they'll deny my request."
DESIRED RESOLUTION: "I want Rockford Homes to pay the $400 fee to appeal for the zoning variance, and I don't want them to deny my request if I receive a variance from the township."
RESPONSE: Michael G. King, vice president of operations, Rockford Homes
"We reviewed a plot plan that contains all the zoning information with the member before construction started. We posted it at the jobsite during construction and provided her with an 'as built' copy before closing. We've spoken extensively with both salespeople who were involved in this transaction and neither can confirm any conversation regarding the member's desire to construct an 18-foot patio.
"If she'd have brought up a patio during the sales process, we would have discussed other options with her. Although the home next door is the same type, the front elevation is entirely different. We wouldn't build the exact same elevation next door. We apologize for any misunderstanding. It's never our intent to mislead any customer."
COMPLAINT: Olden Paris, Columbus
"The Basement Doctor/J & D Basement Systems waterproofed my basement. They appeared to be very careful and informative. A couple of weeks later, I noticed the phone in the study was dead and had to call AT&T. They saw the wire was cut while the basement work was going on and charged me $96 to have my phone line fixed. AT&T said there was no question the wire was accidentally cut during the waterproofing process. I've called and left messages with The Basement Doctor, and no one has returned my calls. The work experience itself was great, but I feel this is their responsibility."
DESIRED RESOLUTION: "I'd like a reimbursement of $96 for having to get the phone line fixed."
COMPLAINT: Sherrie Moore, Dublin, Ohio
"I ordered a bed and chest of drawers from Copenhagen Contemporary Furniture and put down a $320 deposit. They told me to expect delivery in about six weeks. Almost two months later, I received a letter saying they were having difficulties 'resolving logistical problems with shipping companies due to their lack of service.' I was to receive further notice on my order and a possible refund a few days later, but I haven't heard anything since and now can't reach them by phone."
DESIRED RESOLUTION: "I'd like a refund of my $320 deposit."

"I took my record player to Needle In a Haystack for repair. They returned it a couple of months later, but it still wasn't working. They couldn't explain why not, and they've had it ever since."
DESIRED RESOLUTION: "I'd like to know if they think it can be repaired, and if it can, when they think they'll have the repairs completed. Otherwise, I'd like them to return it and my $127."
STATUS: Penalty Box
