Chicago cracked concrete job goes unresolved

Chicago cracked concrete job goes unresolved

COMPLAINT: Ellen Eslinger, Chicago
"Steve's General Contracting/Steve Krehely replaced 150 feet of walkway from my sidewalk, along my house to the alley. It started OK, but 24 hours after the pouring, a crack appeared.

It seemed like an anomaly and was 'repaired.' In less than two months, the walkway had nine cracks. I took photos and wrote Steve.

He came and saw the cracks and said he'd call about a remedy. Surprise - no call.

When I called, he insisted the cracks were normal. My beef isn't with the application, which is fine, but the mix is bad."

DESIRED RESOLUTION: "I'd like a refund of at least $1,133."

RESPONSE: Steve Krehely, owner, Steve's General Contracting/Steve Krehely
"The cracks she's describing are normal for the joints. I told her that was normal; she won't accept it.

She wants me to refund one-third of her money, but the job is not faulty, and I won't do anything more. We offered to redo the job if the cracks are in the surface of the cement. She won't agree to that.

I don't feel I should refund any of her money when I didn't do anything wrong. I told her if she proves to me within one year she had the job redone, I'll refund her money."

STATUS: Stalemate

COMPLAINT: Liam Brennan, Elmhurst
"I hired Kleen-Masters Inc. to clean my carpets, two couches and a love seat. Overall, it was poorly done.

There were multiple stains remaining in the carpet in different areas. The couches remained soaked with water for days, and one couch had no stains removed at all.

He left a note about one small stain that he couldn't remove, but there were multiple stains in other areas where he didn't comment.

I've called multiple times and he hasn't returned my calls. This is simply unprofessional.

I've had my carpets cleaned in the past and never had such a poor outcome. At a minimum, I'd expect the courtesy of a return visit to complete the job properly."

DESIRED RESOLUTION: "I'd like a partial refund."

STATUS: Resolved

COMPLAINT: Frank Tredore, Des Plaines
"Scotts LawnService-Woodridge has treated my lawn for many years. The previous years of service were great, but the last two years haven't been good.

There's lots of crabgrass, weeds and burnt-out spots. After the [most recent] treatment, I complained and told them I wouldn't pay for any more service until something was resolved.

They billed for another treatment after that, so the total bill is $105. I've written them a letter and called their main office, and they keep referring me back to the manager.

He called me back and said he would take care of it, but I didn't hear anything until I received a bill from collections.

I'd hire them again if I could get back to the original level of service."

DESIRED RESOLUTION: "I'll pay the invoice if they'll offer the first two treatments this year for free."

STATUS: Resolved
