COMPLAINT: Helen Bultmann, Palatine, Ill.
"I took my 2000 Volkswagen Jetta to Details Car Wash to get the interior detailed. The owner, Michael Krabbe, drove me home and promised to deliver the car at 6 p.m. At 7:45 I called the shop, and they said it would be 20 minutes because the car was still drying. When he showed up at 9, he said he couldn't get the windows up and offered a free detail service, then left in a hurry.
"The tail lights, locks and windows didn't work, and turning on the headlights caused the trunk to open. Mike said the car needed to be taken to a dealer to have the computer reset and he would take care of it. The mechanic said the computer, which is on the floor of the car under the carpet, was ruined by water. The repair was $469. Mike said the car was brought in like that and refused to pay.
DESIRED RESOLUTION: "I'd like a reimbursement of $469."
RESPONSE: Michael Krabbe, owner, Details Car Wash
"When we returned the car to the client's home, we informed her daughter of an electrical problem. She said they'd been having problems with the electrical system for some time. We made multiple calls to Volkswagen mechanics and every one said the same thing - that we couldn't have caused any damage because of where the CPU is located, which is underneath the firewall next to the engine compartment. They went on to say that 1999-2002 Jettas have had many problems with CPUs.
"The quote the member provided us looked questionable and didn't have a mechanic's name or contact information. This claim is nothing more than an effort to extort money."
