Cherished Chippendale given new life by upholstery expert

One leg on Mary Jackson’s Chippendale chair was loose for five years — a casualty of her family’s many moves during her husband’s years in the Air Force.

Jackson says she couldn’t bring herself to throw the chair away, even though it didn’t match the color scheme in their new North Las Vegas home. “The chair is special to me,” says the Angie’s List member. “I found it in Arkansas while we were on assignment there. I love the Southern charm of the people there, so the chair reminds me of our days in the South.”

Still, Jackson says she hadn’t found the motivation to restore the chair until she had a contractor build an entertainment center and new fireplace mantle in her den.

However, Jackson didn’t want to just repair the leg. She wanted to make it a showpiece again. So she researched upholstering on Angie’s List and found highly rated DR Custom Upholstery of Las Vegas. The company is operated by Denny Rosales and his wife, Geri. Jackson says she sent them pictures and some crude measurements of the chair via email. The couple contacted her the next morning with an estimate and advice on where to buy material at a good price.

“We set a date and time for the chair to be picked up once I had purchased the material,” she says. DR Custom Upholstery fixed and re-upholstered the chair a week ahead of schedule. Geri even made a kidney pillow for the chair with some of the remaining material.

Mary says the $445 she spent to revitalize the chair was worth it. “My chair is beautiful beyond my expectations,” she says. “I’ve had it for 19 years now. I plan on keeping this chair for the rest of my life, and with the new covering, it’s timeless.”
