Charlotte home inspector shares key to stress-free buying
by Kristen Rojowski
Buying a home is one of the largest purchases many ever make and Mecklenburg Inspections Inc. is committed to giving clients an impartial home inspection at an affordable price, says owner Michael Lewis. A detailed and thorough inspection can help ease the stress of buying a home, he says, and it typically takes one hour per 1,000 square feet. "You'll never find us doing a home inspection on a 3,000-square-foot house in an hour and a half," he says.
All inspections are done in accordance to the North Carolina Standards of Practice for Home Inspectors, Lewis says, and the most important aspect is providing professional, quality work.
Angie's List member Thomas Futch of Charlotte has used Mecklenburg Inspections three times. He says Lewis found a mold problem in a remote part of the home he was purchasing; a problem that went undetected in two previous inspections by another company. "This could have caused a serious health issue," Futch says. With three young children in his home, Futch is grateful that Lewis discovered the problem.
The majority of his work comes from referrals, Lewis says, and he encourages customers - especially those new to the Charlotte area - to check Angie's List before hiring a contractor to work on their home.
"A thorough inspection eases the stress of buying a home," says Michael Lewis, owner of Mecklenburg Inspections Inc.
At the end of an inspection, Lewis says he takes the time to give a verbal report on his findings and, if necessary, show homeowners the specific areas of concern. Reports are then e-mailed to the clients within 24 hours of the inspection. He also strives to answer all questions posed by his clients. "If I don't know the answer, I make sure that I research it for them and find the answer quickly," he says.
Member Cynde Flax of Charlotte says hiring Lewis was the best thing she could've done to track down the source of a humidity problem in her home. She says he helped her understand the problem and provided "must-do" versus "nice-to-have" options for repair. "His visit probably saved me hundreds of dollars," she says.
Lewis says he enjoys educating customers about the condition of their homes. "The most rewarding aspect of this job is giving customers peace of mind in their purchase," he says.
