Chandler nursery open to discussion on dead trees
COMPLAINT: Michael McGowan, Fountain Hills, Ariz.
"I hired Moon Valley Nursery [in Chandler, Ariz.] to plant five trees, which cost about $1,300. Their ads guarantee their plants. The two largest trees — eucalyptuses — turned brown immediately after they planted them. I called the manager, and he told me to water them according to schedule. I did, but they haven't revived.
Many different types of eucalyptus trees are often found in Australia. Ficus trees are native in the tropics, with some species common in temperate zones.
"Now, all five trees are either dead or half dead. Additionally, last fall, I purchased five ficus trees and a lime tree from Moon Valley, and they died during the winter. The manager promised to replace them but later denied this and blamed it on the winter frost. I've tried contacting them but have heard nothing. They guarantee their trees but don't stand behind the guarantee."
DESIRED RESOLUTION: "I want them to replace the eucalyptus trees, ficus trees, and lime tree, which haven't survived, or refund me the cost of these trees, which is about $2,100."
RESPONSE: Don Gutshall, manager, Moon Valley Nursery, Chandler, Ariz.
"In our last communication with the customer, it was determined the trees were being watered too frequently, but with far too little water, over the past six months. The ficus and lime trees suffered through a hard freeze. We offered replacements on the ficus, but we show no record of the customer following through. These issues will be resolved to the customer's satisfaction pending [his] communication with us."
