Boston handyman advises against pulling your own permits
For the weekend warrior or part-time handyman, DIY repairs can be an attractive option over paying a professional. But Michael Bowie, handyman for highly rated Henry Scopa Home Improvements, says homeowners should be cautious of making costly mistakes.
Massachusetts state law allows homeowners to pull building permits. With a proper permit, the homeowner can act as supervisor for home projects. Permission from the state means a homeowner or someone a homeowner hires is free to do repairs or construction.
Bowie says homeowners should be especially aware of the rights they are waiving if they choose this route.
"You are waiving all your rights to recovery for insurance or fraud," Bowie says. "Many homeowners don't realize what they are risking."
