A & J Drain Service | Arnold, Mo.
Before starting A & J nine years ago, Marty Rowland sold plumbing and drain equipment and explained how it worked to industry professionals. “I was seeing people do things such as over charge, and I just wanted to go out there to be a good company,” Rowland says. A & J employees work to leave homes clean by wearing booties and using plastic coverings to contain messes, says Rowland, who also donates to local charities and mission work.
Stuart Katz of Chesterfield tried repairing a blocked kitchen drain himself and called A & J when things went awry. “It was 90 minutes of just sheer filth and agony,” Katz says. “So $72 later, a mess worse than Hurricane Katrina, and words that I should not use, I checked on Angie’s List.” He added: “When the A & J guy was here, you couldn’t even tell.”
Member Colin Treworgy wrote one of the 16 Page of Happiness nominations Rowland received last year after he hired the company to clean out 100 feet of sewer drain at his western St. Louis home. “They were careful about bringing in their equipment, covering around the work area to control dirt, and cleaning up,” he says. “I hired A & J a second time because of the good experience.”
Adams Power Shower | St. Charles, Mo.
“If it’s dirty, we clean it,” says Herb Adams, owner of Adams Power Shower. Adams and his brother and business partner, Mike, take after their father, who ran coin-operated car washes in the 1950s and ’60s, Herb says. “We clean everything from an 800-square-foot bungalow to a 1-million-square-foot senior center.”
Crews inspect the homes before they perform pressure washing, taking note of damage or stains. “We can turn down pressure so we don’t damage the house,” Herb says. “We move the plants and spray a low pressure, biodegradable solution to the house to remove the mold and mildew.” They scrub gutters and fascia before a final rinse and white glove test with a towel and wipe down windowsills.
“Our house looks like new again,” says Dave Mack of Ballwin, Mo. “They cleaned every square inch outside. They didn’t miss anything.”
Garvin Group | Ballwin, Mo.
In a time crunch after purchasing a three-bedroom condo for a friend in need, member Donna LeMoine of Chesterfield hired Garvin Group to clean the carpets on the move-in date. “I wanted to get it done that week for my friend, and he was very accommodating,” LeMoine says. “I guess the carpets were horrible, and they were pleased with his work.”
Owner Rod Garvin worked for a commercial cleaning company before starting Garvin Group in 2000. He cleans carpet, drapery and fabric blinds and uses green products upon request. “I’m really conscious about not breaking anything while I’m in the customer’s home,” Garvin says. “I’m always making sure hoses are secure to prevent damage. Instead of flooding a carpet to blast out stains, I get down on my hands and knees.”
