True Grain Woodworks | Oceanside, Calif.

Del Mar, Calif., Angie's List member Julie Laymon describes True Grain Woodworks owner Steve Medeiros as obsessive about his craftmanship. “He’s one of those guys who’s a perfectionist — totally devoted to making sure his clients are happy,” says Laymon, who hired Madeiros to install cabinets for
her kitchen, bathroom and family room and make custom pieces for other rooms.

Medeiros’ love of wood began in a middle school wood shop class, and in high school he worked at a wood mill. He went to work in the pressroom of the Los Angeles Times, but built kitchen cabinets for friends in his spare time. He opened his business full time in 1994 by first establishing relationships with local contractors. “People that are building homes from the ground up or completely gutting homes and remodeling call me,” says Medeiros, whose company received 13 Page of Happiness nominations last year.” He uses formaldehyde-free wood and donated wood pieces to a preschool to use
for building blocks.

Medeiros built a custom-designed pantry for Martin Ecker, who lives
in the University City area of San Diego. “It turned out exactly like I envisioned it,” Ecker says.

Sun and Fun Pool Service | Poway, Calif.

When Sophia Raynor moved into her new Lemon Grove, Calif., home, she contacted Sun and Fun Pool Service to clean the algae covering the pool. Owner Hal Fares also bead blasted the mineral deposit ring around its perimeter and now does her weekly maintenance. “He is proactive about replacing old equipment pieces with my 1980s pool,” says Raynor, who wrote one of Sun and Fun’s 10 Page of Happiness nominations.

Fares began working for a small pool company about 15 years ago and liked it so much that he opened his own business. “I put my heart in it,” says Fares, who offers free consultations. Fares says his punctuality, refund policy and willingness to assist clients with rebate paperwork keeps him booked for weeks.

Hoffman Auto Detail | El Cajon, Calif.

After Hoffman Auto Detail applied a clay treatment to Stephen Sabin’s 2004 Honda Accord, he says it looked new. “They floored me,” says Sabin of northern San Diego. “It gave it a new finish.”

Neil Hoffman got into the business after a friend — impressed with how clean Hoffman kept his vehicle — asked him to detail his car. “Before I knew it,
I had six regular clients that were calling me all the time,” he says.

Hoffman credits his success to business advice such as giving 110 percent and his Christian faith. “I tell God all the time this isn’t my business, this is his business,” he says. Hoffman uses environmentally safe cleaning products and donates to various local charities.
