Best Norfolk-Virginia Beach Contractors of 2012
Mid Atlantic Exteriors | Virginia Beach, Va.
Beryl Fisher calls owner Robert Norman Mid Atlantic’s best asset after she hired the company to repair a roof leak, install siding and build a new deck. “He always took my suggestions seriously and added excellent creative ideas of his own,” the Virginia Beach, Va., Angie's List member says. “He personally oversees his work crews, which are comprised of high quality craftsmen.”
Norman began specializing in exteriors in 2001 after a previous career in home building. “The creative process is the hardest part of the business, but also one of the most important parts,” he says. “I meet with the homeowner and work out what they’re looking for.”
He credits much of his success to his 10-person crew, whom he hires based on diligence and dependability. “It’s absolutely important to get good people who take their job seriously,” he says.
Norman holds a Virginia contractor license and installs Energy Star windows. In one of his 10 Page of Happiness nominations last year, Chesapeake member Kasey Martin praised his work on a fence specifically built to keep her dogs and child safe. “It’s more than I asked for, and I love it,” she says.
General Repairs | Portsmouth, Va.
James Mercaldo, who owns General Repairs with his wife, Kelly, offers a wide variety of services ranging from handyman jobs to remodeling. “I’ll come over and change a light bulb if that’s what someone needs,” he says. “We’re on standby for a lot of military houses because of all the bases around here.”
Member Cheryl A. Gould appreciated Mercaldo’s attention to detail when completing a series of projects and adding a wall to create an in-law suite at her Chesapeake, Va., home. “I already have another list ready for him to come back soon,” she says.
Mercaldo holds a Virginia contractor license and donates his services to church projects. He also volunteered rebuilding after Hurricane Katrina. In one review, a member praised the crew for effectively working around her enthusiastic dogs.
A/C Masters | Yorktown, Va.
When Tyler Bowler’s HVAC unit failed, A/C Masters came out the same afternoon and made time in the company’s schedule when he could be home from work. “More businesses should have that characteristic,” the Newport News, Va., member notes.
Owner Javier Aguirre, a 24-year industry veteran, credits education for his high grades on Angie’s List. “Training is ongoing as long as you’re in business, and we want the best-trained technicians,” says Aguirre, who holds a Virginia contractor license and received the Super Service Award in 2009, 2010 and 2011.
He installs high-efficiency systems, recycles older equipment and supports charities such as Toys for Tots and Wounded Warriors.
