Best Los Angeles Contractors of 2012

A Thorough Guy | Placentia, Calif.

Angie’s List members say Mike Okamura lives up to his home inspection company’s name. “He walked us through each item and photograph in the report and answered all of the questions I had,” says Kevin Liu, a member from Monrovia, Calif. Liu says Okamura worked efficiently and offered a discount because he finished the job early.

Taking time with homeowners earned A Thorough Guy 17 Page of Happiness nominations last year. “At every job I do, I’m trying to explain and find issues with the property like I’d want to know if I was buying the property,” says Okamura, who earned the 2011 Best Contractor recognition and Super Service Awards in 2009, 2010 and 2011.

Okamara, who holds an engineering degree, started his business in 2001. He brings an iPad on the job for clients’ kids to play with during the up-to-six-hour process and members praise his kindness toward pets who follow him around. Member Freemont Dea hired Okamura to inspect his remodeled Montebello, Calif., house. Okamura found numerous wiring errors and an improperly secured air conditioner. “It was probably the best $400 that I ever spent,” Dea says.

Leak Free Plumbing and Rooter | Van Nuys, Calif.

Leak Free Plumbing came out on the weekend to unclog a shower and update a barbecue gas line, impressing member Crystal Zarpas of Encino, Calif. “They were willing to come out on a Sunday to accommodate our schedule,” she says.

Aram Mkrtumyan works with his brother and two cousins tackling small plumbing and remodeling jobs. “It’s a family business,” says Mkrtumyan, who holds a California plumbing license and boasts a decade of experience in the industry.

Leak Free earned a 2011 Best Contractor recognition and 15 Page of Happiness nominations last year. Member Jennifer Shenbaum of Redondo Beach calls Leak Free when her condo tenants need plumbing repairs. “We chose to use him based on his great reviews,” Shenbaum says.

75 Electrical Services | Cypress, Calif.

Owner Alonso Rivas says that wiring and electrical work comes naturally to him. “I give the customer options, and they pick whatever is best for them,” he says, adding that he offers eco-friendly options such as LED lighting. Rivas worked in manufacturing before he obtained a California Electrical Contractor License in 2007 and started 75 Electrical in 2008, naming it after his birth year, 1975.

The 2011 Best Contractor now installs lighting and rewires and corrects electrical problems in and around Cypress. Member Marilyn Livote of Buena Park, Calif., hired Rivas to install a heater, fan and light in her bathroom and upgrade wiring throughout her home. “His knowledge and experience was evident,” says Livote, one of 13 members who nominated 75 Electrical for the Pages of Happiness. “He’s someone I trust and
I’d use again.”
