Best Kansas City Contractors of 2010
Cleaning Edge Inc. | Grain Valley, Mo.
Robert Edgmond, owner of Cleaning Edge, offers a money-back guarantee on his carpet and upholstery cleaning, but in 13 years, nobody's ever asked for a refund. "If I'm not happy with it myself, I don't feel like I should charge my clients anything," he says.
Regina Yaros of Lee's Summit hired the five-time Super Service Award winner to clean her carpet. "His laid-back, friendly and kind demeanor was a welcome change from those big commercial guys," she says.
Edgmond, whose work doesn't require a license, donates a gift certificate for a free cleaning each year to a local church's fundraising auction. Members also commend him for using environmentally safe products and pet friendliness.
Mountain Construction | Overland Park, Kan.
Mountain Construction owner Glenn Gruber says he chose his company's name and snowcapped peak logo because it communicates calm to homeowners who might get nervous about remodeling. "It's a big deal when you basically live with a client for two months, tearing their house down and putting it back together," he says.
Rebecca and Mark Cohenour of Lenexa, Kan., say they needed a $19,000 project done in three weeks before guests arrived. "[Gruber] basically bent over backward to get everyone in and out," Rebecca says. "There were no excuses, no delays. I was amazed at his level of dedication."
Angie's List member Terri Helsel of Stillwell, Kan., says Gruber, whom she hired for a basement remodel, "threw in" a built-in toy box under an egress window so her children could reach the window in case of fire.
Gruber, who has a Johnson County contractor license, uses reforested lumber and recycled materials when possible. The company also gives back by donating money to Children's Mercy South Hospital.
