Danny’s Pro Painters | Indianapolis

When it came to restoring the exterior of his home in the North Meridian Street Historic District, Angie’s List member David Rowe knew he wanted Danny’s Pro Painters from his first communication with Danny Juarez, the company’s director of operations. Rowe says Danny’s carpenter impressed him, as did the company’s prep work and high-quality materials. “Some of the trim was original to 1917, so they did a beautiful job matching both the design and detail,” says Rowe, who submitted one of 33 Page of Happiness nominations that the two-time Best Contractor received in the last year.

Juarez’s uncle, Claudio, who’s retired but still owns the business, founded the company more than 20 years ago in New York. Juarez brought it to Indiana in 2004 and moved from Plainfield to Indianapolis’ Westside last year. It continues to service the entire Indy area, painting with low-VOC products and performing associated work, including hardwood flooring, crown molding, exterior trim and deck staining.

His uncle’s principles continue to guide the business, which requires no license. “Communication is No. 1,” Juarez says. “From the day you give the person the estimate to the day you complete the project, you have to follow up with them.”

Junk Dawgs | Indianapolis

As its red trucks and spotted Dalmatians logo hints, this junk removal company has its roots in the fire department. In fact, Junk Dawgs co-owners Bennett Grove and Aaron Tietje, who met in the Air Force while stationed in Alaska, both continue to work as full-time civilian  firefighters at Grissom Air Reserve Base near Kokomo, Ind.

Grove, who grew up and is based in Speedway, Ind., says the pair wanted to open a business together and became inspired to go into junk removal in 2011 after he sold a real estate investment business that often used haulers. “I was always having to hire people to haul junk away, and it was amazing how unprofessional many were,” he says.

Angie’s List members from across the Indianapolis area report nothing but top-notch work from Grove, Tietje and their six employees, most of whom are veterans. Member Wretha Reveal of Noblesville, Ind., appreciated that they returned her call after-hours regarding her request to remove a refrigerator and oversized chair. “I felt like they went out of their way to communicate with me,” she says. “They took a great deal of care going down my hallway, making sure they didn’t touch anything on the wall.”

Junk Dawgs’ crew likewise impressed member Jennifer Flack of Greenwood, Ind., so much that she called them out three times last year, including after her basement flooded. Each time, they responded promptly and courteously, she says. Her only regret? “I wish I would have known about them sooner!” she wrote in her Page of Happiness nomination — one of 18 the company received last year.

Many of those nominations and other reviews, including several from members who purchased Big Deal coupons for discount junk hauling, also
cite the company’s commitment to charity and recycling. Grove says more than half of the items picked up are donated to places such as Goodwill or the Salvation Army — with the original owners receiving the donation receipt for tax purposes — or taken to specific recycling sites so the metal and plastic can be reused. The company, which requires no license, also has donated its services to recovering hoarders, Grove says.

Charles Thompson, CPA | Indianapolis

Angie's List member Kevin Johnson, who lives in Home Place near Carmel, Ind., says Charles Thompson outperforms previous certified public accountants he’s hired. “He has an encyclopedic knowledge of the tax code; every question we threw at him, he knew the answer,” he says.

Thompson, who’s based in Lawrence, Ind., worked as a federal government accountant for 35 years before retiring eight years ago. He began preparing tax returns as a side business in 1978 and prepared 660 returns last year. “I enjoy the challenge of starting with a pile of papers and turning it into a tax return,” says Thompson, who volunteers for local events, including the Mini-Marathon, and saves paper by filing taxes electronically.

Thompson has earned the Super Service Award every year since 2007, and he received 10 Page of Happiness nominations in the past year.

SM Inspection Services | Indianapolis

After more than 20 years working in construction, owner Sean Meredith says reading home inspection reports that his wife received as a Realtor inspired him to earn his home inspection license. Since starting in 2011 with business partner Pam Lee, the Eastside-based company earns praise from members such as Kevin Koonce of Brownsburg, Ind., who submitted one of 11 Page of Happiness nominations last year. “It was incredible service and attention to detail,” he says.

Meredith attributes his growth to a Big Deal he offered in late 2011 for a half-price home inspection. “About 95 percent of my business comes from Angie’s List,” he says. To reduce waste, he uses rechargeable batteries and paperless reports. He also donates to a local charity for the homeless.
