Best Indianapolis Contractors of 2009
Mattingly Home Improvements | Fortville
Peter Kim of Broad Ripple says it was Pat Mattingly's willingness to go above and beyond - literally - to fix his leaking roof that earned his praise for Mattingly Home Improvements.
"He's the best by far - he was up on my roof for more than 45 minutes with a hose trying to find the leak," Kim says, adding that two other companies' attempts to find the leak were unsuccessful.
It's all in the name, according to Mattingly, whose two-employee handyman service enters its fourth year in business this year. "If somebody says 'Pat Mattingly did this,' I truly want it to be quality work," he says. "My business is an extension of me."
Mattingly, who holds a Marion County general contractor license, strives to do right by the environment, too; his most frequent home repair is mending rotted wood-framed windows, saving them from landfills.
"He's ridiculously awesome, and my dogs love him," says Julei Hui of Fishers, who hired Mattingly to repair dog-damaged siding and install a pet door.
Mattingly's company garnered a Super Service Award for 2008 and six Pages of Happiness nominations.
Indy Inspection Service Inc. | Indianapolis
Angie's List members say when you hire Indy Inspection Service Inc., you're investing in great home advice at a good price.
"There was not one question he didn't answer," says Obioma Nnaemeka of Lawrence, who hired Richard Able's one-man company to inspect her condominium.
"I could tell he not only has a deep understanding of houses, but what it meant to my bottom line."
Able, who's licensed by the state, says his 10 years in business have taught him an important principle. "I just try to be honest with people and treat them fairly, the way I want to be treated," he says.
His customers say they appreciate that. "I'm a young homeowner and he asked how much I knew about home maintenance before launching into what to do," says recent home buyer Jennifer Kostello of Carmel.
"He didn't treat me like a little girl. He treated me like a daughter he really wanted to help."
Indy Inspection has earned the Super Service Award three years in a row and six Pages of Happiness nominations this year.
Lyon Glass Block LLC | Indianapolis
Like the material he uses, customers consistently credit Nick Lyon of Lyon Glass Block for being a solid and dependable performer, and transparent about his pricing and workmanship.
"He doesn't seem like a typical salesman," says Mandy Bourke of Castleton, who recently hired Lyon to install glass block windows in her basement. "It was like talking to a friend."
She says Lyon later returned and resealed all the windows at no charge after a leak unrelated to his work developed.
That dedication to customer service has earned Lyon Glass Block its second year of recognition as one of Indianapolis' Best Contractors.
Lyon, who carries a Marion County general contractor's license, says his formula for success is simple: "I strive to give each customer personal attention and make sure they're completely satisfied."
Lyon Glass Block has earned the Super Service Award three years in a row and has five Page of Happiness nominations this year. Lyon also recycles window frames and other materials.
