Best Dallas Contractors of 2010
DFW Deck & Fence Restoration | Carrollton, Texas
DFW Deck & Fence Restoration owner Kenny Dugan credits his company's success among Angie's List members to his upbringing on the family farm. "My father taught me if you can't do it right the first time, don't do it," he says.
Dallas resident Cheryl Parker, who hired the one-man company to restain her fence, says Dugan's attention to detail and thoroughness earned her praise. "He knew exactly what he was doing and he did a phenomenal job," says Parker, one of 10 members who nominated the company for a Page of Happiness in 2010. "Every step of his process was the way you wish everyone else would do their jobs."
Dugan, whose work doesn't require a license, also attributes the high standards of Angie's List members as a driving force for his company. "I decided it wasn't going to be about making money hand over fist," he says. "I just wanted to get an A rating from every single job."
DFW also donates used fence boards to help build enclosures at local animal rescues.
Dallas Glass & Mirror | Dallas
A third-generation glass man with more than 15 years of professional experience, Dallas Glass & Mirror owner Stephen Platek says his father and grandfather started teaching him about the business when he was 7. "They taught me to just be honest with everyone, keep them informed and give them a fair price," he says.
Angie's List members say those simple principles have earned their business again and again. Anthony Francis of Dallas says he's hired the company three times, including a recent emergency call. "Our yard guy's mower threw two stones through our large window," Francis says. "I called Steve and he was here in 30 minutes."
Members also consistently praise Platek for the quality of his work. He attributes his success to being a small, owner-operated company with one employee. "I know it's going to get done right," says Platek, whose trade doesn't require a license. "Making people happy makes me feel better."
He also gives back to the community by supporting local high school programs.
Safe Pro Pest Control | Plano, Texas
When Song Ma of Plano found termites in his kitchen island, he called owner Alex Cantaboni, based on his positive Angie's List reviews. Ma says he was skeptical due to negative experiences with other pest control businesses, but Cantaboni won him over. "Most of the problems with other places is they don't pay much attention to detail. They would come in for 10 minutes, charge me over $100 and I'd see insects back just a couple days later," Ma says. "But Safe Pro, they were meticulous and willing to spend the time to explain different alternatives to me."
Cantaboni, 28, who has a state exterminator license, says he's been working in pest control for 11 years. "I have been doing this a long time, yet I still feel every day is different," he says.
His focus on customer satisfaction garnered 16 Page of Happiness nominations in 2010, including a report on his pet friendliness. "I always tell my employees and customers, 'We're not in the bug-killing business, we're in the peace-of-mind business, and we guarantee our work until the customer is at peace," Cantaboni says. He offers organic, nontoxic, eco-friendly pesticides upon request, and he says he donates to various charities.
