Best Chicago Contractors of 2012
JEJ Masterclean | Lake Zurich, Ill.
Owner James Jassak works as a one-man operation and plans to remain that way. “I have complete control over every aspect of the job, from the first phone call to the follow-up,” he says. “That way, I know I’m keeping the same quality of service day in and day out.” He put three decades of experience as a corporate carpet cleaning technician and franchise manager to work when he opened his own business in 2008, offering a variety of cleaning services with a focus on carpet cleaning and upholstery.
“I don’t want to just deal in volume; I want to build lifetime relationships with customers,” the 2011 Best Contractor says. “I constantly involve them in the process and educate them on what’s going on.”
Angie's List member Rebecca Row of Buffalo Grove, Ill. praised his skills in one of the 35 Page of Happiness nominations Jassak received last year. “He scheduled my cleaning within four days of my initial email, even though he was on vacation,” she say. “Now my carpets look like new.”
Members also noted his knack for cleaning up stains from children and pets. Jassak, whose work doesn’t require a license, uses environmentally friendly cleaning products.
Hynek Construction | Morton Grove, Ill.
Hynek Sedlacek began his career constructing buildings in the Czech Republic and honed his skills for more than a decade in the U.S. before he went into business himself, focusing on chimneys, mortar and tuckpointing. He makes his second appearance as a Best Contractor after earning 20 Page of Happiness nominations in the past year. “I like challenges, and I like to do my best,” he says.
Sedlacek, who holds a Chicago masonry license, embraces a thoroughly hands-on approach to the job. “I try to do as much as I can myself — I use my own mix and my own technique,” he says. He works with a small crew of between three and seven people, and remains as hands-on as possible.
“I’m ultimately responsible for the work,” he says. “I only hire people I know I can trust to do the job right. I’m not just sitting in my cot watching. I’m out there doing the work.”
Sedlacek says he enjoys the variety his job provides. “There are so many different types of tuckpointing,” he says. “I started out working on big buildings when I was in the Czech Republic, and now I’ve been able to work on a lot of beautiful houses.”
He says he doesn’t hesitate to tell people if a new chimney would be better than a patch job. “I tell them, I won’t just do patching, because it’s my name on the job,” he says. “After all these years, I’ve seen so many chimneys, I can tell which ones are going to be worn out again in five years. And if that happens, you’re not going to be happy with me. I want to do work that’s going to last a very long time. I want to build it right.”
Angie's List member Karen Arneson of Glenview, Ill., chose Sedlacek to repair mortar, brick and windows on her 1955 home, which features custom tan brick that’s not available anymore. She says he impressed her by using materials at hand to keep the look consistent. “He cut out visibly damaged brick and replaced it with matching brick from an area that was going to be covered up by a deck,” she says. “He also patched up a couple of other small spots without hesitation. He knows his masonry, and his crew is perfect.”
Tigele Tile & Mosaics | Jefferson Park, Ill.
Johann Janoschka learned his trade in Poland and Germany in the style of European masters. He says he strives to apply Old World craftsmanship to his tiling and remodeling work as owner of Tigele Tile & Mosaics. “I want to help people create their dream bathrooms and kitchens,” he says.
Janoschka, who holds a Chicago home repair license, says he uses environmentally friendly products, including zero-VOC products when available, and shares his skills in the community by teaching local children how to make mosaics. He earned a 2011 Best Contractor recognition and 20 Page of Happiness nominations last year.
Angie's List member Tahir Sair of Hoffman Estates, Ill., called in Tigele to complete a tile, baseboard and fireplace installation job when another contractor left midway through. “Johann stayed until midnight to complete the job in two days,” Sair says. “The finished product was beautiful.”
MagiCaulk | Buffalo Grove, Ill.
Angie's List member Jeff Crell holds no doubts about having hired owner Laszlo Lenart for several tiling jobs in his Deerfield, Ill., home. “You can’t afford to make a bad decision on tiling because of the high cost of materials and permanency of the job,” he says. “Laszlo is the best of the best.”
Lenart says he loves being able to quickly see clients’ reactions to his work. “I always like to see the customer’s face at the end of the job, when they see how nicely it turned out,” he says. Lenart, who holds a Chicago home repair license, earned 17 Page of Happiness nominations last year and was a 2011 Best Contractor. In one POH-nominated review, Angie's List member Elizabeth Noe of Round Lake, Ill., notes he went out of his way to befriend her enthusiastic dogs.
