Best Boston Contractors of 2009
P.M. Fleming & Son | Sharon, Mass.
For P.M. Fleming & Son's customers, keeping it in the family makes all the difference. The two-man heating and cooling company consists of Paul Fleming and his son, Paul Fleming Jr.
"I immediately felt I could trust them and I wouldn't be taken advantage of," says Franklin resident Jocelyn Williams, who needed an HVAC checkup.
Paul Fleming, who's licensed by the state, sums up his business philosophy by what he tells his son.
"I tell him to be respectful, be upfront with people, fix it the best you can and stand behind it," says Fleming, who also keeps dog biscuits in his truck for customers' pets.
When Kathryn Larkin's air conditioner stopped working this summer during a 95-degree heat wave, she called P.M. Fleming & Son, who quickly responded the next morning - a Sunday.
"He really went out of his way for me when I was in dire straits," the Franklin resident says.
The company's hardworking attitude earned them eight Pages of Happiness nominations in the last year and the 2008 Super Service Award. They also donate services to local groups and save energy by installing high efficiency units.
GreenHow Inc. | Auburndale, Mass.
When Helene Marion of Wayland found strange-looking pellets under her rug, she suspected her home was being overrun by insects. But Sean Greenhow's organic pest control and lawn maintenance company, GreenHow Inc., allayed her fears.
The problem? Ankle weights leaking their stuffing. "He's a really good detective," Marion says. "And he refused any payment I offered."
Experiences like Marion's have contributed to the company's 10 Pages of Happiness nominations this year and a 2008 Super Service Award.
"On his first visit, he spent 45 minutes taking soil samples, explaining different options and entertaining my 3-year-old son," says Chad Dunn of Waban.
"It seems like he's just around the corner every time you call," says Wellesley resident Jerry Nigro, who hired the company for pest control and lawn care.
Greenhow, who's licensed by the state, says his company was founded with a simple principle: "We want to deliver a great experience and fulfill a need for customers."
He also helps the community by allowing local green organizations to conduct rain-barrel workshops in his building.
Millennium Alarm Technologies Inc. | Leominster, Mass.
Customers consistently credit Brian Catino's alarm installation company for its responsiveness, straightforward advice and great prices.
That consistent customer satisfaction has earned Millennium Alarm Technologies its second year of recognition as one of Boston's Best Contractors.
"They're one of the best service companies I've worked with," says Wellesley resident Pratip Banerji, who hired the company to upgrade his alarm system.
Catino, who's licensed by the state, says he performs the majority of the work himself. He also reuses old alarm system equipment.
"When I do an installation, I try to do what I'd do in my own house and give them a good product at a fair price," Catino says.
Millennium has 12 Pages of Happiness nominations in the last 12 months, three Super Service Awards in three years, and Catino donates services at cost to local youth groups and families in need.
"Brian is personable, competent, experienced and straightforward," says Lincoln resident Candace Foster. "All companies should be this well run."
