Best Atlanta Contractors of 2011
All Wildlife Control | Roswell, Ga.
Owner Matthew Field always felt a connection with animals. After working for a few years as a computer programmer, Field decided to match his work to his interests by founding All Wildlife Control in 1996. "I almost feel like I was born to do this," he says.
Janine Towers of Chamblee hired Field to rid her crawl space and attic of raccoons. "I love animals, so I really like Matthew's commitment to saving as many animals as possible," she says. "I wanted them out of my house, but I didn't want them harmed as a result."
Member Keith Gundling commended the work the company did to keep squirrels out of his Canton home. "They sealed every possible [access] point with mesh and painted it the appropriate color to ensure the aesthetics of the house remained," Gundling says in one of 10 Page of Happiness nominations the company received in the last year.
Field, whose work doesn't require a license, says he uses environmentally friendly products such as Krud Kutter, a biodegradable gutter cleaner. In addition, Field volunteers and serves as chief financial officer for a nonprofit conservation organization in Atlanta. Members also cite the company for its pet friendliness.
Prime Fence Group | Canton, Ga.
When a neighbor's tree fell on her wood fence, member Nadine Lozito of Marietta says she turned to Prime Fence Group for the repair and owner Dennis Lehman made himself readily available. "I really liked that throughout the process, we spoke only to Dennis, not through a middleman," she says. "He made the process smooth and easy. He provided me with some of the best service I've ever had from a contractor."
When Lehman founded the company in 2008, he wanted to focus on fostering a personal connection with customers. "I am a true owner-operated company," he says. "I show up and oversee all of our installations. I love being hands-on."
Acworth member Brenda Dixon, in her Page of Happiness nomination, marveled at Lehman's prompt and thorough response after she hired him to fix a fence to keep her Yorkies from escaping. "Dennis went out to my house and emailed me a detailed sketch of what needed to be repaired," she says. "They told me they could have it completed the day I moved in and they did!"
Lehman says he enjoys satisfying every customer. "When they see the overall transformation of the yard and the joy it brings to them, it brings a smile to my face," he says. His wife, Tiffany, does clerical and public relations for the company, which recycles leftover materials.
Lehman, whose work doesn't require a license, says the company donates supplies and wood products to a local school for projects. They also help raise money for several charities, including March of Dimes, local fire departments, Toys for Tots and the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America. Member reports laud the company for being pet and child friendly.
KDL Painting | McDonough, Ga.
For the second straight year, KDL Painting ranks as one of Atlanta's Best Contractors. Owner Kevin Laird, who founded the business in 2003, says a commitment to quality over profits is one key to his consistent ratings.
"It's not all about money to me," says Laird, who donates to a local church's children's academy, the Humane Society and other community projects. "I'd rather take a loss and leave the client satisfied than get rich and make them unsatisfied."
Decatur member Vivian Viverito hired Laird, whose work doesn't require a license, for interior painting. "I've worked with dozens of contractors over the last 15 years, and Kevin is by far the most conscientious," she says.
KDL uses green materials, and also recycles plastic and metal paint cans. Members also say he's pet friendly.
The Duct Man of Atlanta | Alpharetta, Ga.
Member Kate Perry of Woodstock says The Duct Man of Atlanta cleaned her home's air ducts meticulously. "I've had ducts cleaned in other homes, and the Duct Man was the most thorough by far," Perry says. "They took the time to inspect the ducts for any issues."
Providing excellent customer service helped co-owners Allan and Yvette Chandler earn a Best Contractor nod for the second straight year. "I know every day I try to give my best to the customers, and that's all I can do," says Allan, whose work doesn't require licensing.
Allan teaches Sunday school and leads mission trips through his church, while Yvette tutors disadvantaged youth through the Girls on the Run program. Members also cite the company as being pet friendly.
